- I'm interested in trying out 6 meters but have a limited budget. Does anyone
- know of a way to easily use an IC-725 or IC-W2A to try the band out?
- Preferrably with low risk of ruining the radio.

- I have been working on an office of emergency communication setup using an
- Icom IC-901 with the fiber optic link option. We have access to a 100 foot
- tower on building 500 feet away making the fiber option the most practical
- solution. Unfortunately Icom does not provide a cable over 64 feet. the tech
- support at Icom recalls an Alaskain group making a 800 foot connection using
- fiber. They could not remember who they were or what they used to do it
- (glass or plastic).
-
- If anyone has knowledge or experience with fiber optic I would appreaciate
- any information that could be provided. Please send responses directly to me.
- I will post a follow up on the success that I have.

- A gentle reminder to those who feel outraged about the RACES bulletins :-)
-
- A few years ago, I volunteered to feed the RACES Bulletins into the
- Internet system. That's the extent of my involvement. I don't write

- The bulletins originate at the California State RACES Office. You can

-
- Someone was kind enought to provide a copy of the (old) NBS information
- pamphlet. It was very interesting, but I found the following a bit
- suprising:
-
-
- > 1b. Antennas and Modulation
- > The broadcasts on 5, 10, and 15 MHz from WWVH are from phased
- >vertical half-wave dipole arrays. They are designed and oriented
- >to radiate a cardioid pattern directing maximum gain in a westerly
- >direction. The 2.5 MHz antenna at WWVH and all antennas at WWV are
- >half-wave dipoles that radiate omnidirectional patterns.
-
-
- For such an an elaborate installation and because of the vital service
- they provide I would have expected NBS to use antennas more sophisticated
- than dipoles; there certainly are antennas with more gain which would
- give the same radiation patterns.
